Geo-Demographic Data

Clients often start their analytical journeys with our geo-demographic data products. These products provide demographic insights on Canadians based on geographical location.

SuperDemographics consists of current year estimates of population statistics, Estimates and Projections describes 3-, 5- and 10-year projections, and Daytime Market provides estimates of the population who are present in a 6-digit postal code during normal business hours. Historical Estimates and Census provides historical data on the 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021 census.

Dwelling Type and Age describes the dominant type and the likely age of dwellings in a 6-digit postal code.

Census Geography Boundary files are available. They are often used by GIS specialists or for mapping purposes. We can also provide custom extracts at custom geographic levels. Finally, Postal Code Boundary files enable marketers to visualize the variation of consumer behaviors at the micro-geographic level.

Methodology

Tooltip text

We updated the census data 2021 from Statistics Canada to current year estimates with the following approaches: enhanced cohort survival methods, collaborative filtering techniques, and structural coherence techniques. Cohort survival method is used as a foundation for developing population forecasts. In addition to historical trends from 1991 to 2021, we consider the current birth and mortality rates, migration and immigration statistics, labour force activities and economic indicators. We have developed nonlinear modelling techniques for estimating other demographic variables and preserving the coherence structure in the census data. Spatial characteristics of geographic areas, e.g., apartment dwelling, new residential areas, business density are embedded in the modelling process. The updated Census was used as input of our mathematical models for extrapolating data from DA to 6-digit postal code level.

Data Sources include Census data 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021 from Statistics Canada, the yearly immigration statistics from year 1981 to 2021 from Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Royal LePage’s quarterly Survey of Canadian Housing Price from 1974 to 2022, monthly housing statistics from Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), and population birth/mortality rates from Health Canada and provincial Ministry of Health, and building permits data from major municipalities.

We validate our methodologies and results with in- and out-of-phase Census data to ensure the accuracy of the data product.
